Last week I had an ICP monitor placed in my brain. Last week I had an ICP monitor placed in my brain. This one has to be fitted while conscious, with a manual hand drill. The probe is wired up to a computer which constantly collects my brain pressure measurements.

When you revisit past trauma in an operating theatre while fully conscious you ultimately emerge stronger. In full disclosure, I have PTSD from past experiences back in London’s hospitals where I have  endured various procedures and extended stays to figure out what is going on with my irregular brain pressure.

Each shunt (drainage valve) can bring new and different problems or if you’re lucky you get many stable years. Over the last few years I’ve been desperate for help. I’ve never felt amazing with this latest shunt but much better than before. Then two years ago I felt something change, what followed was a slow, torturous decline in well being. This “headache” is mechanical, it’s no migraine, my brain is literally being crushed by the CSF fluid. Too much pressure can result in seizures, coma or death. I experience other symptoms like dizziness, fatigue and ????. For me it’s not been dramatic, it’s the slow kind of suffering, I have to get worse to get better.

Last week was difficult but the hospital staff were absolutely amazing and really helped me in every way. The best news is that my neurosurgeon has analysed the data the two days of data and we’ve worked out a plan that doesn't involve more surgery. It won’t be instant, but this may possibly help. I’m so happy that we have a plan but even happier that my pain is actually confirmed with data, real medical data. When you’re so ill for so long you can question what is real. I feel vindicated and I've overcome the all too common scenario of a woman not taken seriously by the health system never.

I want all you sick girls to fight and to be seen. Never back down. Our survival instinct is so strong.
