Orla Kiely, a designer known worldwide for her iconic prints, has collaborated with coffee brand Douwe Egberts. Designing three patterns for the coffee jars, Orla’s recognisable style has made a simple object into a thing of beauty. This highlights the issue that in our throwaway society we need to reevaluate what everyday objects can be kept and treasured.
I made it to the preview of this collection at the Orla Kiely showroom in Fitzrovia. The space was beautifully decorated, displaying the jars in various creative ways. Orla was also there ready to chat about her designs. The idea of having coffee with Orla Kiely, chatting about design filled me with glee. This opportunity doesn’t come around everyday!
Once I had explored the showroom and creative displays, I got the chance to have a long chat with Orla. She was very welcoming and happy to share her thoughts on this latest collaboration, we also went on a tangent talking about interiors, design and Mad Men, I could have talked for hours. As I questioned Orla about this collection it was clear that she has a strong passion for upcycling and sustainability in design. This is a very important and positive attitude to have when your designs can influence so many people.
Take a look at this beautiful event and spot the jars. Which design is your favourite? and how would you reuse yours?
