A picnic on the beach in Malmö

When visiting a new town it is easy to fall into the trap of trawling the streets and hitting the tourist spots. On my recent trip to Malmö (sponsored), the Swedish town across the bridge from Copenhagen, my travel companion Cate St Hill and I decided to have a picnic on the local beach in Malmö.

This way we could discover the interiors shops, food halls and supermarkets with a purpose. Experiencing the town and lifestyle in a much more interesting way. Firstly we went to some interiors shops for picnic supplies such as Granit, Lagerhaus, AB Småland and H&M home. Food shopping from both the fantastic foodhall, Saluhall and the rest from a huge supermarket, ICA MAXI. To buy wine it is very different in Sweden. They have a state run system to help limit the problems of alcohol abuse. The chain of wine stores (owned by the state) is called System Bolaget be prepared to show your ID. We found a lovely organic rosé perfect for the picnic.

The beach in where we sat was located next to the famous Ribersborgs Kallbadhus and unknowingly, the local dog beach, haha. But that didn’t stop us. We met SO many lovely dogs and the beach was clean. People were swimming in the sea together with dogs and ducks as the sun was setting. It was lovely. If dogs are not your thing, there’s plenty more beach on the other side of the Kallbadhus (swimming bath house).

Despite the humorous realisation that we were on a dog beach and an influx of wasps interested in our salad, this was a pretty perfect way to discover the beach in Malmö and enjoy what the town has to offer.
